ATV Maintenance Tools
Just like your passenger car or motorcycle requires regular maintenance to run correctly and perform well, your ATV should be serviced to keep it in good shape. While you might think that this means taking it into the shop every so often to have it repaired, this is only necessary when you can’t address minor issues yourself.
If you don’t know where to start with your ATV maintenance routine, Riderz Edson is here to help with our handy guide to the tools you’ll need to acquire to tinker with your ATV. Our dealership is located in Edson, AB, near Yellowhead County, so if you do need service, call us to make an appointment with our mechanics.
Good Wrenches
A nice set of wrenches can be passed down through a family for generations if kept rust-free and well-maintained. ATVs and other quads are usually measured in metric, so you’ll want a set of metric wrenches, which you can usually buy along with standard wrenches to save money. You should also have several allen wrenches, crescent wrenches and vice grips, as well.
Tire Pressure Gauge
The easiest maintenance to perform is checking your ATV’s tires. This is similar to how you would check your car’s tires, so you can use the same tire pressure gauge or buy a separate one for your ATV toolkit if you like. Make sure that your tires are correctly inflated to the manufacturer’s suggested pressure and look at the treads to ensure the wear is even. If there are any embedded objects in your tire treads or the wear is uneven, you may want to take your ATV into the shop.
Multimeter
A multimeter is a handy household tool and it’s small and compact to save space in your tool kit. This device measures electrical conductivity, whether that’s resistance, amperage or voltage. Using your multimeter will help you figure out if your ATV’s performance is being reduced by electrical problems.
Screwdrivers
A good set of screwdrivers is useful at home and in your ATV tool kit. Get a set that includes many sizes and different tips for ride maintenance, as well as a comfortable grip. You want well-made screwdrivers that will serve you well for years. Ratcheting screwdrivers can speed up your work, but you have to be careful not to lose all the bits.
Torque Wrench
As you become more involved in your ATV’s mechanics, you’ll probably end up needing a torque wrench to apply precise amounts of force to the fasteners on your ATV, some of which are under extreme pressure.
Set Of Sockets
A set of socket wrenches is helpful in ATV maintenance since they remove nuts and bolts without damaging paint or other finishes. These are faster working wrenches than normal ones so your work can go a little faster. You’ll need some ratchets of different sizes to accompany the socket wrenches.
Breaker Bar
A normal wrench with a long, sturdy handle, a breaker bar can be useful for very stiff fasteners that won’t come off with a normal wrench. Don’t forget this important element of your tool kit.
Air Compressor
An air compressor lets you inflate your tires in your shed or shop before every ride so that they’re evenly pressurized. This machine can be a bit spendy, but its uses extend beyond ATV maintenance -- you can inflate the tires of your passenger car, your bicycle or your motorcycle, fill up pool toys or balloons for parties, or use it to spray paint on your house.
Wooden Or Urethane Mallet
While it might seem counterintuitive to use a mallet on an ATV, if applied correctly, a wooden or urethane mallet can be a very useful tool. These materials are soft enough that they won’t scratch or damage paint and other coatings, which makes them great for ATVs.
